2007 URBAN COMMUNITY FORESTRY GRANTEES (FUNDED)
City of Audubon Park - Audubon Park shall establish a demonstration-planting project along city street easements.
Berea College - Berea College will purchase a notebook computer for its Arboriculture Program, on which GIS and TerraSpace software will be installed. This will allow the Arboriculture staff to expand their tree inventory capabilities.
City of Bowling Green - Bowling Green will update and reprint the educational brochure, "Planting Trees in Bowling Green." This will be available to the public and will be distributed at nurseries and classes/lectures on urban forestry.
Christian County Extension Service - The Christian County Cooperative Extension Service will establish a demonstration-planting project at their facility. Trees used in the planting will be from Kentucky's Theodore Klein Plant Selection list and will be suitable for urban landscapes.
Danville-Boyle County Parks and Recreation - The Danville-Boyle County Parks and Recreation Department shall establish a demonstration-planting project on the grounds of their regional park. Tree identification and information will be part of the project.
Eastern Kentucky University - Eastern Kentucky University shall establish a demonstration-planting project on campus that will serve in part as an outdoor classroom for students in biology, horticulture and other disciplines. Tree information signage will be included as part of the project.
Fayette County Conservation District - The Fayette County Conservation District shall implement an urban forestry education series consisting of general public outreach as well as educational programs for local schools.
Fort Thomas Board of Education - The Fort Thomas Board of Education shall create an outdoor learning facility for elementary and middle school students that will focus on native Kentucky trees. The project will be located at Highlands Middle School and will involve students and teachers from the gifted and talented program.
City of Frankfort - The city of Frankfort will restore and update the city's urban forestry Web site to better provide information to the public. The street tree inventory will be updated and will allow the city to determine management, maintenance and removal requirements for the local trees.
City of Highland Heights - The city of Highland Heights will establish a demonstration-planting project as a portion of the city's Streetscape Plan and will include educational elements.
Kentucky Arborists' Association - The Kentucky Arborists' Association will host a statewide outreach program in the field of urban forestry and arboriculture. They will also host the following workshops: Kentucky Urban Forestry Conference, Arborist Certification workshops, Tree Risk Assessment workshop, Diagnostics Conference, Junior Arborist Program, Plant Health Care workshop and a Pesticide workshop.
Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government - The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government will continue the position of arborist technician to assist their Division of Streets, Roads and Forestry department.
Lincoln County Fiscal Court - The Lincoln County Fiscal Court shall establish an educational demonstration-planting project within Lincoln County First Southern Veterans' Memorial Park.
City of Madisonville - The city of Madisonville shall provide urban forestry assistance through an Arbor Day program, public forum, continuing education for tree board members and the development of tree kits for local schools.
Morehead State University - Morehead State University shall develop an approach for small cities to be able to map existing urban forest cover and plan for future plantings.
Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution - The Nazareth Literary and Benevolent Institution will complete a tree inventory. The inventory will map their urban forest and will provide current tree information, determine maintenance needs and identify opportunities for future tree plantings.
Northern Kentucky Urban and Community Forestry Council - The Northern Kentucky Urban and Community Forestry Council will continue their pass-through grant program to local schools and organizations. Additionally, they will work toward building community capacity in urban forestry; provide grant administration and other council projects and activities.
City of Paducah - The city of Paducah shall hire a contractor to assist with software purchase, setup and training of their city arborist in a tree inventory software program. The software will assist the city arborist with tree inventories and tree management.
City of Paintsville - The city of Paintsville will establish a demonstration-planting project in their downtown. The city will work with the Division of Forestry on a revised planting plan that will be appropriate to the planting site.
Pennyrile Resource Conservation and Development Council (RC&D) - The Pennyrile RC&D Council will complete projects relating to urban forestry including hands-on training for K-12 students and a downtown tree-marketing program designed to educate urban residents.
Pulaski County School System - The Pulaski County School System shall establish an educational demonstration tree-planting project on the grounds of Pulaski Central High School, an alternative education facility. Educational tree information signage will be a portion of the grant project.
City of Russellville - The city of Russellville shall start the initial stage of implementing a management program that will provide the city with information on which to base an effective tree management program.
City of Southgate - The city of Southgate shall hold the second annual Tree Board Seminar for tree boards across Kentucky. Topics will include a host of information related to urban forestry and the management of tree boards.
University of Kentucky - The University of Kentucky will complete an inventory of the Arboretum, which will include documenting species, plant locations, identification numbers and records of performance.
Yew Dell Inc. - Yew Dell Inc. will continue to support their large group of volunteer support including continuing education and management. Plant walks at the Arboretum will be held by Dr. Paul Cappiello and will focus on providing current tree resource information to both the public and industry professionals.
