Kentucky Envirothon

Envirothon Team
The Kentucky Association of Conservation Districts sponsors the Envirothon to help Kentucky students understand the balance of the quality of life and the quality of the environment, so they can become environmentally aware, action-oriented citizens.

Congratulations Oldham County High School!

The 2007 edition of the Kentucky Envirothon was a close contest with Oldham County High School taking first place, Fayette County 4-H Club taking second place and Model Lab High School in Richmond taking third place. Oldham County High School also placed first in the wildlife and special topic categories. Fayette County 4-H Club placed first in the soil and oral presentation categories. Model Lab placed first in the aquatic category and Green County High School placed first in the forestry category.

What is Envirothon?

Envirothon is a competitive, problem-solving, natural resources experience for students in grades nine through 12. The event is competitive, but education is the bottom line. The students are trained in the ways that real life environmental problems are solved, with the support of natural resource professionals.

The students work in teams of five to solve environmental problems. These teams are tested on their knowledge of Kentucky's natural resources at five "in the field" test stations. Each station covers a separate topic addressing soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatics and the current environmental issue. Through hands-on experiments, analysis and use of critical thinking skills, the teams answer a set of questions at each station.

Kentucky's competition is held in the spring each year. The winning team, along with adult advisors, compete in the national competition. The travel expenses and accommodations for the team that represents Kentucky are paid for by the Kentucky Envirothon Committee.

The 2007 National Canon Envirothon was held at the Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York on July 29 - Aug. 4, 2007.

Envirothon is made up of four standard testing areas (forestry, aquatics, wildlife and soils) and one current issue that changes from year to year. The 2007 current issue was "Alternative/Renewable Energy."

The Division of Forestry can assist schools in locating forestry-related resources. Call the Division of Forestry at 502-564-4496 and ask for the education section or e-mail Jennifer Turner. Dates and locations of the 2008 regional and state competitions will be announced next spring.

The book Science of Forestry Management by Kris Irwin and the American Association of Vocational Instructional Materials (AAVIM) is an excellent resource tool and study guide. You can order your copy by going to http://www.aavim.com/.

If you would like your school to compete in the next Envirothon, contact your local conservation district office or call the Kentucky Division of Conservation at 502-564-3080.
